Programmatic SEO means building many pages from structured data, each answering a specific search query. Done well, it creates thousands of useful entry points from search. Done badly, it creates thousands of thin pages that harm the site. We built a reference hub for marketplace sellers with a commission directory covering 9,308 product types, calculators, news and articles. Here is what we learned.
1. Start with data, not with pages
The hub is only as good as the data under it. We use official platform tables as the single source, load them as versions with an effective date, and keep the history. When the source changes, pages update from the new version and the change is visible.
2. Every page must be useful on its own
A page for each product type should answer the question the visitor really has: how much is the commission, how does it depend on price, what does it mean in money. We add a calculator, a short explanation and answers to common questions. A page that only repeats a table row is thin content.
3. Structure and linking
We link each page up (to its category and section) and sideways (to related items and tools), and each page is reachable in a few clicks from the home page. Structured data (FAQ and breadcrumbs) helps search engines understand the page. A short machine-readable summary of the site (llms.txt) helps AI search tools.
4. Technical hygiene at scale
- Clean URLs and one canonical address per page.
- Sitemaps split into chunks of 10,000 addresses, with an index.
- Caching, so thousands of pages load fast.
- Monitoring of indexing and errors.
- A kill switch: one setting that closes the long tail of pages from indexing if search engines react badly.
5. Quality control for generated text
Any generated text goes through rules: facts are checked against the source, stop-words and style rules are enforced, and doubtful material is sent to a person. Scale never excuses inaccuracy.
6. Patience and honesty about results
Search engines need time to discover and trust thousands of new pages. We do not promise rankings or traffic. We measure indexing, impressions and enquiries, and improve the pages that show potential.
