Ozon Hashtags: Do They Actually Drive Sales?

Ozon Hashtags: Do They Actually Drive Sales?

The short version

Hashtags on Ozon are worth filling in. But do not expect miracles from them.

Let us break this tool down plainly, without the magic and legends that often surround it in seller trainings.

What Ozon hashtags really are

From a seller's point of view, hashtags are part of product card packaging - roughly on the same level as photos, description and specifications.

They:

  • count toward the card's content rating,
  • affect how "complete" the listing looks,
  • act as an additional signal for the algorithms.

So this is not a separate promotion universe. It is just one more field that is better filled than left empty.

How Ozon hashtags work

The principle is the same as on social media.

A hashtag is a navigation label tied to an interest or topic. A shopper sees the hashtag on a product card, clicks it and lands on a selection of products with the same hashtag.

That selection can include:

  • your product,
  • competitors' products,
  • any other sellers using the same hashtag.

According to Ozon, hashtags help to:

  • expand reach,
  • better understand audience interests,
  • target products more precisely by search queries and interests.

You can also:

  1. Invent your own branded hashtags for a brand or product line.
  2. Promote them through social media, shorts, reels and video content.
  3. Capture the audience that comes back to Ozon through that tag.

Or take the second route - ride trends. Track popular hashtags on TikTok, Reels and Shorts and use similar ones on your listings.

On paper this sounds great. In practice it is a bit more boring.

Where hashtags are filled in and how they look

Hashtags are added:

  • when creating a product card,
  • or when editing an existing one.

In the Ozon seller dashboard, every product has a separate "Hashtags" field where you enter them.

On the shopper's side:

  • hashtags appear on the product card below the description,
  • clicking one opens a selection of all products with the same tag.

The tool is easy to understand - mainstream users are already used to hashtags from social media.

Ozon hashtag requirements

It matters to get the formal rules right:

  1. Each hashtag starts with the "#" sign.
  2. A single product can have no more than 30 hashtags.
  3. Only letters, digits and underscores are allowed in a hashtag.
  4. A single hashtag can be no longer than 30 characters.
  5. Hashtags must be separated by spaces.
  6. So: #fishing #outdoor_activities #garden_goods... not one long string of mashed-together symbols.
  7. Do not duplicate in hashtags the specifications already present on the card: brand, product type, characteristics.

In essence, hashtags are not about repeating the product name. They are about adding thematic labels that are interesting to the audience.

What real hashtag tests show

Now the most honest part.

In our experience and in our tests, Ozon hashtags:

  • do not produce noticeable sales growth,
  • barely affect rankings and performance overall.

We tried different approaches.

A simple example. Take the "fishing rods" category:

  • we set broad hashtags: #fishing #outdoor_activities #hobby and so on,
  • then more precise ones: #fishing_rod #feeder_rod #spinning_fx_3000,
  • then combined broad, mid-frequency and very narrow tags,
  • we swapped hashtag sets and tested different groups.

And in practice:

  • no strong effect on traffic,
  • no jumps in sales,
  • no noticeable change in keyword rankings...

... we did not see any of it.

Ozon's algorithms run on other factors, and hashtags currently occupy a very modest place in that system.

In my observations, hashtags are today one of the weakest packaging tools in terms of direct impact on sales.

So should you fill them in or skip them?

My approach:

I recommend filling hashtags in.

At the very least because:

  • they count toward the content rating,
  • they help the card look "packaged by the rules".

But do not expect a miracle. Why? So far I have not seen a single case where hashtags suddenly "took off" and delivered a tangible sales increase.

So I would not recommend investing much time or resources into this task.

A sensible approach:

  • think through a basic hashtag set for your niche once,
  • split it across product groups,
  • use it as a template when creating new cards.

Practical tips for working with hashtags without going overboard

If you do it, do it sensibly, but without fanaticism.

What you can do:

1. 3-5 broad tags by interest and usage context. Example for fishing: #fishing #outdoor_activities #outdoor_leisure #hobby

2. 5-10 more precise tags by use case and product type, without directly duplicating specifications. Example: #fishingWithFriends #giftForAngler #fishingGear

3. Branded hashtags for your product lines. If you also run social media, you can use the same tag there and on Ozon so the audience gradually gets used to it and associates it with you.

4. Do not spend hours on each hashtag. Hashtags have no strong impact on sales right now, so the goal is to meet the formal criteria and not lose half a day on it.

Conclusion

Ozon hashtags are:

  • part of product card packaging,
  • a small contribution to the content rating,
  • an additional but weak signal for the algorithm,
  • a plus for how "tidy" the card looks to the platform.

As of today, hashtags do not deliver a noticeable effect on sales, traffic or rankings.

So the strategy is simple:

  • fill in hashtags,
  • do it once and systematically,
  • do not build growth expectations on them,
  • and put real promotional effort into what actually moves sales.
