CTR is one of the ranking factors on Ozon and one of the numbers that directly shapes your sales volume and search positions. Below is what CTR is, how to calculate it, which factors move it, and what to do step by step to keep it healthy.
What CTR is and how it is calculated
Stripped down, CTR is the click-through rate of your product card. It shows the share of users who saw your product in search results and clicked it. If you sell smartwatches, CTR tells you how many of the people who saw your listing clicked through.
The principle: the higher the CTR, the more interested buyers you get. Further down the funnel, more interested buyers means better conversion, and the other metrics start to grow too.
The formula: clicks divided by impressions your card received over a period, multiplied by 100%. CTR is expressed as a percentage.
Example: your smartwatch card got 1,000 impressions in Ozon search and 50 clicks. CTR = 50 / 1,000 x 100% = 5%.
You can analyse CTR in your Ozon seller account. The key idea: with the same impressions and the same market volume, a higher CTR gives you more visits to the card.
Why CTR matters for sales and ranking
Raise click-through and, with the same market volume and demand, you can raise sales right away. Increase CTR by 50% and you can potentially increase sales by 50% - without extra ad spend, just by working on an internal metric.
Many sellers underestimate CTR. A high CTR also raises the probability of purchase: the more people click, the higher the share of orders.
Ozon's algorithms rank products with high CTR higher in search. The logic is simple: why would the platform push a product that users are unlikely to click? When CTR goes up, you see the search position rise, and sales follow.
A low CTR does the opposite: it debuffs the listing and reduces reach. Fewer impressions, fewer clicks, less traffic, fewer sales.
What counts as low CTR
Treat anything below 2% as low. Go into your product cards, calculate your CTR, and if it is under 2%, it is time to dig into what went wrong and fix it.
Factors that influence CTR
Main image
The main image is what the buyer sees first. When someone searches for smartwatches on Ozon, the first thing that catches the eye is the infographic and the cover on the first image. This is where the biggest impact comes from.
Title keywords and price
Keywords in the product title and the price work best on Ozon today. The price has to be comparable with competitors, because it also drives the decision. People will not buy an overpriced item when similar products sit next to it for much less.
Ratings and reviews
A high rating always lifts sales. If your rating is low - 4.5, 4.0 or below - expect click-through on your products to drop sharply. Why would anyone click a low-rated item when well-rated alternatives are right there?
Ozon badges
Ozon badges help CTR: bestsellers, hits, sales, and various labels. Blocks such as bestsellers, Ozon's choice, and reviews for points all raise the chance of a click. Discounts and promotions also motivate visits - those sale and promo labels.
How to analyse CTR in your seller account
Go to the promotion section, then to promotion analytics. There you can read CTR by column, and then evaluate CTR across different products and ad formats.
When you analyse ads by strategy, you may see that cost-per-click campaigns give a higher CTR while cost-per-order campaigns give a lower one. That happens.
The goal of this analysis is to identify the problem products with low CTR so you can work on them and lift the metric.
Brightness and contrast of the visual
The visual must be bright and sharp, without a noisy background or weak detail. Blurry, smeared, noisy images drag CTR down.
Contrasting colours work well because they set your product apart from competitors. Look at which colours competitors use: in the smartwatch niche the search results are fairly dark - black and grey. Covers with a white or light blue background stand out. Contrasting backgrounds are a way to get noticed and earn a higher CTR.
The right angle matters too: show the key features of your product through a correct photo.
Minimalism and product features
Always show the product's features and what sets you apart from hundreds or thousands of competitors. Minimalist design works well because there are no extra elements getting in the way of perception. Many sellers on Ozon use fairly heavy design: bold white font with a black outline is hard to read. Minimalist infographics now sometimes perform even better.
When the whole niche looks heavy in perception and design, minimalism is how you stand out. Adding infographics helps as well.
Backgrounds, emotions and meaning
Some sellers still sell on a plain white or grey background. Minimalist design looks pleasant, but most sellers sell through infographics. Plain white backgrounds generally do not sell, because such products often get a very low CTR.
An emotional trigger works well: a photo in use. Show how the product is applied - in sport, on walks, as a gift. Through design you transfer emotions and deliver the meaning you want to put into the product. For example, sport for calls, or sport for a business audience.
What lowers CTR in the design
- Text that is too small. Buyers on a marketplace are lazy: there is too much choice and too much to compare, so people will not read small print. They scroll past. Even if you are trying to get a point across, people will not squint at it.
- Overload with details. Too much graphics, too many elements and texts overload the infographic and the visual perception. Minimalist presentation works now: do not cram every advantage into one image, spread them so they are comfortable to take in. Overload annoys people and they scroll past.
- Poor-quality photos. Low resolution, bad processing, pixels, blur. This reduces trust and certainly does not help sales.
- Mismatch with expectations. If the image does not convey the real look of the product, if it is unclear and does not get the meaning across, it hurts click-through.
- Grey and dull backgrounds, faded colours. A grey background in infographics often lowers CTR, while white or brighter colours raise it.
- Missing key elements. Every product needs a unique selling proposition - what makes you different. Try to find or invent uniqueness in any product, even if yours is roughly the same as others. Competition on Ozon is high and keeps growing, and the sellers who learn to invent uniqueness and communicate it through infographics and design will be the ones who sell well.
Title and keywords
Clarity and informativeness come first. The title should explain immediately what the product is, without filler. You can also describe characteristics: brand, model, size, material, purpose.
Numbers and trigger words work well: "down to -30 degrees", "100% cotton". Anything that matters to your buyers for your product is worth putting in the title. And the title must match search queries: it should answer a real buyer query and include it.
Common mistakes: keyword stuffing, irrelevance, all caps and extra symbols. Ozon usually rejects these at moderation, though sometimes they slip through.
What to do: test regularly. Analyse CTR and adjust titles and the keywords you integrate into them. This work should be continuous: test something, swap keywords, watch how it affects CTR, click-through and the traffic volume you get.
Price as a click-through factor
Price is one of the key factors of click-through. People on Ozon choose largely by price.
Too high a price lowers CTR: people compare products and will not buy a heavily overpriced item. Too low a price can also raise suspicion - what kind of cheap, low-quality model is this? If every competitor sells much higher and you sell much lower, that is a red flag for the buyer.
A competitive price is the goal. Analyse the prices of analogues and aim for the middle of the market range: not much more expensive, not much cheaper. If a higher price is part of your strategy and positioning, that is fine, but otherwise stay somewhere in the middle.
Effective and realistic discounts
Discounts work when they look significant and real. They do not work when you set an absurd price and then cut an absurd amount off it. Users can see whether a discount is genuine, and they compare.
Psychological pricing and testing
Psychological prices work well on Ozon: 999, 990, 1,400. Prices like 999, 1,900, 1,000, 1,500, 1,490 influence CTR more strongly. A dollar or two does not matter much to you, but for the buyer it is a purely psychological lever on the purchase decision.
Test prices regularly: experiment with different price levels and track the effect on CTR, conversion and sales volume. Do this on an ongoing basis and keep an eye on the numbers.
Price combined with a unique selling proposition
Your price can be above the market average, but only together with your unique offer. If your product is more expensive, show why: materials, quality, guarantees. If it is cheaper than competitors, show why as well.
Reviews and ratings
Reviews are a powerful click-through trigger. Products with reviews attract more attention. There is a direct correlation: the more reviews, the higher the click-through, the higher the conversion, the higher the CTR.
A low rating and few reviews always mean a low CTR. If the rating falls below 4 to 4.5, click-through, traffic and sales fall with it. Watch this and do not let the rating sag.
What you can do:
- Stimulate reviews: offer points for reviews, put inserts in the package asking for a review, add video instructions on using the product in exchange for a review. Look for any way to raise the number of reviews.
- React to negatives quickly. Answer bad reviews and remove the causes of dissatisfaction. Delivery varies, and something can go wrong in transit. As a seller you can help the user solve the problem, and often people change the review and restore a good rating. That is another way to influence your rating.
- Photo and video reviews strongly raise trust and improve how the card is perceived. Photos and videos from real buyers lift conversion and trust far more than the ones you add yourself.
- First reviews matter a lot on Ozon. Pin the reviews that best reveal the product and remove fears and doubts at the top. The buyer was worried about something, bought from you and found it was fine.
Summary
- CTR is a key success metric. The higher the click-through of your cards, the more views and impressions you get, then more clicks, and in the end more sales and customers.
- The main image is the first and biggest trigger. It must be bright, sharp, informative and, above all, different from competitors. It does not have to be bright, but it must not look like the others.
- The title must be clear and contain keywords, without filler or stuffing. Short, precise, with the keywords included.
- A competitive price raises the chance of clicks. Analyse the market and test price options, watching the effect on click-through.
- Reviews and ratings are a very strong trust factor. Grow them and work with negatives - often a negative can be turned into a positive, which affects ratings too.
- Ozon badges - promotions, sales, reviews, points campaigns and so on - also raise click-through. It is worth joining promotions: besides more traffic, they give a boost and labels that affect CTR.
- Constant analysis and optimisation. Track CTR by product, test different content, covers, colours and messages. That is where the result comes from.
Working on CTR is a continuous process. You will not fix one element and see CTR jump to the stars. Put forward hypotheses, look for ways to raise CTR and work through them: propose, test, try again to lift the metric. That is how the work is done.
