Five Common Ozon Mistakes New Sellers Make

Why new sellers struggle on Ozon

Launching on a marketplace looks easy from the outside. In practice, sellers arrive with problems that trace back to the same handful of decisions made at the start. Here are the five most common beginner mistakes on Ozon, so you can learn from someone else's losses instead of your own.

Mistake 1: playing blind

A typical message goes like this: "I listed on Ozon, put my stock into FBO, and sales just are not coming. What do I do?" Then you ask how the product was chosen, and the answer is: "I just looked at what seemed interesting and ordered it."

That is trading on instinct, and it rarely works. To enter a marketplace successfully you need at least basic entrepreneurial skills. You have to see the risks, understand how the platform's algorithms work and how pricing is built.

You also need to know what the platform and buyers will expect from you, including which documents are required to sell. Sellers manage to collect fines even at this stage. Study the platform's knowledge base, follow the experts and sellers who publish on the marketplace, take a course or talk to experienced sellers. Your first job is to learn as much as possible about the business you are about to fund with your own time and money.

Mistake 2: choosing the wrong product

Where there is money, there is risk. Product selection is probably the most common mistake, and not only among beginners. It is also the one that is hardest to excuse, given how much free material on product selection already exists.

One seller I spoke to was doing reasonably well. I asked whether he used my product-selection spreadsheet. He said yes, every time he restocks, and thanked me. Then he added that he was unhappy with it. I asked why. His answer: thanks to the spreadsheet he was stuck selling toilet brushes and making millions. Without it, he might be selling something more "masculine", earning less, but with a better story for his friends.

It is a funny story, but it shows how the mechanism works. A well-chosen product drives about 90% of success on Ozon. That is why this stage deserves maximum attention and a disciplined, step-by-step selection process.

Mistake 3: skipping unit economics

Unit economics and product selection are the two most important parts of marketplace selling, and neither works without the other. Finding a product is only half the job. You also have to calculate what you will actually earn from it.

Many beginners do not know how to calculate unit economics or which metrics matter when entering a marketplace. As a result, sellers trade at zero or at a loss for months, sometimes years. This happens to experienced sellers too, not just newcomers. Imagine their surprise when they discover that a full year of work produced almost no profit.

Before you launch, work through pricing and margins properly. Model every cost line, including any training or outsourcing you plan to use, and check the numbers before you commit money.

Mistake 4: a barely filled product card

Working directly with Ozon sellers, I see the same picture repeatedly. A seller uploads a product, does the bare minimum on the card, and expects it to sell. Competition on the platform grows every day, yet these sellers enter as if nobody else operates in their niche.

One detail many sellers ignore is the content score of the card. My tests show that a high content score, all else being equal, earns better positions in search than a competitor's identical product with a weak card. The advice boils down to one line: fill the content score to the maximum you can.

The more fields that affect the content score you complete, the better your search visibility. In practice, fill every field. Work on your average rating and build up the number of reviews. Answer every buyer question.

The card exists to answer all of the buyer's questions: what the product is like, what emotions it delivers, which specifications matter, and what advantages it offers.

Mistake 5: missing or limited resources

Being a marketplace seller costs time and money. Time needs particular focus, at least at the start. Decide whether you will do everything yourself, in which case success depends on the knowledge you already have or gain through training, or whether you delegate part of the work, in which case the question becomes purely financial.

On money: I have never met anyone who built a fast, effortless fortune this way. Do not believe the fairy tales about quick profits. Plan your budget so you can place at least two or three supply orders ahead of demand.

This is one of the most frequent problems beginners hit. If you plan to train or delegate store operations, put those costs into your unit economics. Most importantly, calculate everything in detail before you start selling on Ozon.

The takeaway

Mistakes are a normal part of business, but learning from other people's mistakes is far cheaper than learning from your own. Avoid these five, and your path on Ozon will be smoother.
