Three Ozon promotion mistakes that eat your margin

Three Ozon promotion mistakes that eat your margin

Why promotions deserve a plan

A promotion on Ozon is a discounted sale run under the marketplace's name rather than the seller's. For the seller it is extra reach and a higher chance of a sale. For the buyer it is a lower price. Ozon promotes the campaign for free, but the gap between your regular price and the promotional price comes out of your pocket. Sales go up, stock sits in the warehouse for less time, and revenue per unit goes down.

Campaigns fall into three rough groups: global, standard and niche. Sometimes Ozon also applies an extra discount on your behalf as the seller.

How Ozon pushes promotional items

Ozon promises TV, radio and billboard exposure, priority placement in the category and in search, and entry points on the home page of the site and app. What it does not promise is individual advertising for your specific item. Extra reach does not guarantee that your target buyers see it, or that anyone buys.

One more thing to watch: Ozon may automatically add in-stock items that sold in the last 30 days to campaigns. Auto-enrollment cannot be switched off, so keep an eye on notifications in your seller account and remove items or reset the promotional price manually in time.

Mistake 1: leaving promotions out of unit economics

A common path for a new seller: pick a product, find the purchase cost, check the category commission to see what share the platform keeps, add a rough advertising allowance, and set a launch price from those inputs. In numbers, that economy often looks like 90 on 90 - barely break-even once a discount lands on top.

Promotional costs belong in the calculation from day one. Model the discounted price, the commission, logistics and ad spend together, and check what margin is left before you opt in.

Mistake 2: joining every campaign at once

This is the opposite extreme. If you treat promotions as a price lever to lift conversion, joining all of them can take you to zero or below. The campaigns genuinely worth preparing for are the big annual ones, such as Black Friday and the pre-New Year sales.

Start preparing in late summer. Seasonality of the product matters less here, because demand across the board spikes in that period. The way to avoid the loss-making scenario is simple: set a minimum price for the item. Even if Ozon adds it to a campaign automatically, the price will not drop below your floor. You set it on the product page under the edit button.

Mistake 3: betting on a single tool

Competition in many categories is brutal, so one promotion tool is rarely enough to reach the top. Promotion has to be a combination of several instruments working together.

If your Ozon store is a hobby, that is one story. If it is a business, the approach has to be systematic at every stage: product selection, preparing the item for launch, the launch itself, and promotion for sales and profit. Plenty of stores turn into hobbies precisely because early-stage mistakes keep them from generating profit.

Takeaway

To make Ozon promotions add profit instead of losses: build promotional costs into unit economics, do not join every campaign at once, and promote with a system rather than a single tool.
