Selling Beyond Marketplaces: Building Your Own Channel System

Selling Beyond Marketplaces: Building Your Own Channel System

Marketplace sellers often treat sales outside the platform as something expensive: a big website, a marketer, an ads specialist, a producer. It does not have to be. Selling beyond marketplaces is about building a system of your own touchpoints with the customer: a storefront, promotion, a customer base and messaging.

The point is to stop being only a supplier to a platform and start building your own funnel, where the customer sees you and your brand, and where you can come back to them tomorrow, in a month or in six months.

What the system consists of

There are four blocks, and each one solves its own task.

  • Your own storefront, a touchpoint with the customer. It can be anything: a website, a landing page, a Telegram channel, a social media page. The format is secondary. What matters is that it is your space, not a tile in the marketplace search results.
  • Promotion. Content marketing, advertising and other ways of attracting customers that promote your products specifically.
  • A customer base. Emails, phone numbers, Telegram and social media subscribers. These are not abstract "marketplace buyers" but specific people you can reach.
  • Messengers and email campaigns. Messages, warm-up sequences, upsells, win-back of old customers. Being able to write to a person yourself, instead of hoping an algorithm shows them your product card, is invaluable.

What it gives you

When all four blocks are assembled into a system, the logic of the business changes:

  • the customer first sees you and your brand, not just a product;
  • you can come back to them tomorrow, in a month, in six months;
  • your business does not collapse if the platform decides to change the rules of the game.

The last point is the main one. As long as your only touchpoint with the customer is a product card on a marketplace, you depend entirely on the platform's decisions. Your own channels remove that dependence.

Where to start

You do not need to close all four blocks at once. The logic is this: first determine which touchpoint and which customer base you already have, or can create fastest, and then connect promotion and campaigns to support it. Priorities and the math are exactly what should be structured into a clear system: what to do first and what to leave for later.

What to do

  • Choose your storefront: a website, a landing page, a Telegram channel or a social media page.
  • Start a customer base: emails, phone numbers, subscribers. Not "marketplace buyers" but specific people you can reach.
  • Set up a communication channel with that base: messengers and email campaigns for warm-ups, upsells and win-back of old customers.
  • Connect promotion to your storefront: content marketing, advertising and other ways of attracting customers.
  • Set priorities: start with the block that can launch fastest in your situation and leave the rest for later.
